The POD® is a 510k cleared night guard used to protect the teeth while treating the symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction such as jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches.

THE POD®: GENERATING NEW IDEAS.
SOLVING BIG PROBLEMS.

The POD® is a custom fit, laboratory fabricated intraoral mandibular splint designed to aid in treating bruxism and TMJ Dysfunction. Worn during sleep, the device serves to protect the teeth and restorations from the destructive forces of bruxism and will help to alleviate TMJ/TMD, headaches, and facial muscle pain. The unique design increases anterior tongue space while limiting the amount of occlusal contact points with the maxillary arch. Limiting occlusal contacts allows for a reduction of trigeminally innervated muscular activity and can reduce muscle tension and help alleviate associated TMJ pain symptoms and headaches. The POD® is:

  • Custom made for you, for a precise fit.
  • Made from high quality, biocompatible materials, with a one year warranty.
  • Allows full range of mouth movement–you can open and close your mouth, as well as talk, drink water and yawn while wearing the splint.
  • Covered by some Insurance plans

HEADACHES

Do you suffer from recurring stress or tension headaches?

WHAT IS BRUXISM?

Bruxism, also known as tooth grinding, is the medical term for clenching or grinding the teeth during sleep or during the day. Bruxism is a common condition and when done occasionally, may not be harmful. When it occurs regularly, it may be associated with moderate to severe tooth damage, facial pain, jaw pain, limited jaw movement, headaches and disturbed sleep.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM BRUXISM?

  • Teeth grinding or clenching, which may be loud enough to awaken your partner
  • Worn tooth enamel or notches, exposing deeper layers of tooth
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw sounds such as clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
  • Facial muscle tightness, jaw pain
  • Ear ache – because of severe jaw muscle contractions
  • Tension, stress or migraine headaches
  • Chronic facial pain

WHY IS TEETH GRINDING HARMFUL?

In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. Chronic grinding may wear teeth down to stumps. When this happens, bridges, crowns, root canals, partial dentures and dentures may be needed. Not only can severe grinding result in tooth loss it can also affect the jaws, result in hearing loss, cause or worsen TMD/ TMJ, and even change the appearance of your face. Sleep bruxism may also be linked with medical conditions and have an impact on your quality of life.

TMD

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION

WHAT IS TMD?

When the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) loses function and is accompanied with pain syndromes, then a person is said to have TMD (Temporomandibular dysfunction) or TMJD (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction). If not resolved, this condition can cause chronic pain and bone deterioration along the mandibular condyles.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM JAW PAIN OR DYSFUNCTION?

TMD may involve jaw pain when eating, pain in the temple region upon awakening, pain in the ear region or pain in the back of the neck. Clicking, popping, locking, and grinding (crepitus) sounds in the jaw joint and ear region are indicative of dysfunction and improper joint position. Having a limited maximum opening is a also a sign of function issues.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM HEADACHES?

Different types of headaches such as tension, stress, cluster and migraine headaches, may be related to TMD. Many times, hyperactive trigeminally innervated muscles will be overly contracted (hypertonus) and be tender and sore. A chronic TMD condition can cause increasing pain levels in the facial muscles involved with the bruxism (such as the Masseter and Temporalis muscles) that may be reported as a headache.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM DISTURBED SLEEP?

Many times, the sounds of severe grinding (Bruxism) can be loud enough to be heard by a bed partner. This bruxism may be enough to awaken a person or disrupt normal sleeping patterns. Frequent disruptions of sleep from TMJD may lead to daytime fatigue. This fatigue can become a major quality of life issue for many people. All patients with daytime sleepiness or fatigue should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
